A very sad day

Caly enjoying a passage

Caly helping me sew

It has taken me a while to be able to post this, our trip across the Tehuantepec was made more memorable due to an event that will be with us forever. This trip across the bay had been anticipated for several months and lately there had also been a realization that our kitty Caly was sick and we would probably lose her on this trip. Several weeks ago she developed a slight weakness in her hind legs, at first we thought it was trauma. She continued to become worse, her appetite was off and after several vet visits we came to the conclusion that it wasn’t as simple as trauma and there was nothing to be done. What she had contracted exactly was not clear, but from symptoms and several knowledgable responses to our questions we think it was FIP, Feline Infectious peritonitis.
Caly was one of the sweetest kittens I have ever had, she quickly became a part of our family and the crew of Rocinante and we got so much joy out of watching her grow and play. She certainly gave us many hours of laughter.
She made it to El Salvador with us before she died and we miss her very much. Caly, thank you for the joy your short life brought to us.

  1. Oh, Vicki. We are so sorry to hear the news. As you were lucky to have had Caly in your lives, she was so fortunate to have had your love and care for her short life. We miss you – back on internet for one day until heading out around the island so will not be on internet again likely for another week. Just catching up now on where you are and what you’ve been doing. sounds incredible. love you loads & love to Lare too. xoxo B.

  2. Oh we are so sad to hear about Cally : ( We hope you are enjoying your time down south and want you to know you are missed ! Scott played at Loreto Fest and has met up with some others who play but it isn’t the same as playing with Lare as their styles were so compatible.

We’ll keep reading your blog and tracking your lives and perhaps we’ll meet up north again.

  3. So sorry to hear about you loosing your kitty – We know what joy it brings having a pet on board, as well as some of the challenges. Unfortunately, we will be in a similar position in the not too distant future. Really not looking forward to that. We ended up returning to La Cruz after loosing a prop on the way to the Marquesas, then decided to summer in the sea and try again next year. Hope El Salvador is everything you hoped!
